Managing Backups

CloudPe Cloud offers a backup solution to ensure data protection and recovery. It enables users to create secure copies of their data, safeguarding against loss due to accidental deletion, hardware failure, or other unforeseen events. This service ensures quick and reliable restoration, minimizing downtime and maintaining business continuity.

The backup service lets you restore virtual machines and volumes by creating new Instances from backups.

There are two types of backups:

  1. Full Backup:
    • Copies the entire compute volume.
    • Can restore data on its own without needing other backups.
    • Takes more time and storage space.
  2. Incremental Backup:
    • Copies only the changes made since the last backup.
    • Faster and uses less storage space.
    • To restore, you need the first full backup and all the incremental backups after it.

Creating backup plans

You can set up automatic backups for multiple volumes by creating a backup plan. A backup plan includes the backup schedule and rules for keeping backups.

To create a backup plan:

1. Go to the Backup Plans screen and click Create Backup Plan.

2. In the Create Backup Plan window:

  • Enter a name for the backup plan.
  • Optionally, add a description (avoid personal or sensitive information).

3. Under What to back up, click Manage.

  • In the Manage Volumes window, select the volumes you want to include in the backup plan.
  • Click Save.

4. Under Schedule, choose the backup schedule:

  • Retention 7 days: Back up daily and keep backups for 7 days.
  • Retention 14 days: Back up daily and keep backups for 14 days.
  • Custom: Set your own schedule (choose months, days, time, and the number of backups to keep).

5. Click Create.

Managing volumes in backup plans

You can manage the volumes you want to back up by adding them to or removing them from backup plans.

If you remove a volume from a backup plan, the backups already created will not be deleted.

A volume can only be part of one backup plan at a time.

To Add Volumes to a Backup Plan:

1. Go to the Backup Plans screen and select the backup plan you want.

2. On the right, open the Volumes to Back Up tab to see the current volumes.

3. Click Manage above the list.

4. In the Manage Volumes window, select the volumes you want to add.

5. Click Save.

To Remove Volumes from a Backup Plan:

1. Go to the Backup Plans screen and select the backup plan you want.

2. On the right, open the Volumes to Back Up tab to see the current volumes.

3. Click Manage above the list.

4. In the Manage Volumes window:

  • Uncheck the volumes you want to remove.
  • To filter and view only assigned volumes, check Show Only Selected Items near the search bar.

5. Click Save.

Editing and deleting backup plans

You can edit a backup plan’s name and description, change its schedule, and delete it when it is no longer needed.

To Edit/Delete a Backup Plan:

1. Go to the Backup Plans screen and select the backup plan you want.

2. On the right, click Edit.

3. In the Edit Backup Plan window, make the necessary changes and Save.

4. You can click on the Delete button to remove the backup plan. It will ask you for the confirmation to Delete.

Creating and deleting backups manually

You can initiate an instant backup job for a single volume by creating a backup manually. Such a backup does not have a retention policy and can only be deleted manually.

You cannot delete a backup that has dependent backups. To delete a full backup chain, start deleting its backups one by one backwards, starting from the latest incremental backup and finishing with the full backup.

To manually create a volume backup

On the Volumes screen, click a volume that you want to back up.

On the volume right pane, click Create backup now.

Once the backup is created, it will appear on the Recovery points screen.

To manually delete a volume backup

On the Recovery points screen, click the recovery point that you want to delete.

Click Delete in the confirmation window.

After deleting a recovery point, all its data will be lost.

Restoring Volumes and Virtual Machines from backups

Restoring volumes from backups:

1. On the Recovery points screen, click the recovery point from which you want to restore a volume.

2. On the right pane, click Restore volume.

3. In the Restore volume window, specify a volume name and select a storage policy, and then click Restore.

During the restore process, a new volume is created and the existing volume is not overwritten. You can restore a volume from a backup of a data or boot volume.

Restoring virtual machines from backups

During the restore process, a new virtual machine is deployed and the existing VM is not overwritten. You can restore a VM from a backup of a boot volume only.

1. On the Recovery points screen, click the recovery point from which you want to restore a VM.

2. On the right pane, click Restore virtual machine.

3. In the Restore virtual machine window, the boot volume will be defined automatically and will be restored from the selected recovery point. Specify all other VM parameters.

4. Click Deploy. The new virtual machine will appear on the Virtual machines screen.
